We are calling for federal legislation to establish a universal right to legal representation for anyone facing deportation regardless of who they are, where they are from, or what they can afford.

Universal representation must be high-quality representation that focuses on a person’s entire well-being, including legal and social services, and be independent from political interference.

By doing so, we will not only help bring fairness to our immigration system but also promote a future where those facing deportation can defend themselves with the support of their families and loved ones.

This legislation must be shaped by impacted people and communities to protect against disproportionate harm that our immigration system inflicts on all people who face systemic bias, including Black migrants and other migrants of color.

It's time for Congress to do what's right to make universal representation a reality for every person.
